It is nice
song, isn’t it? Voila! It is Hokey Pokey
song. It is one of nice English song that can be used for teaching. It can also
be downloaded in YouTube easily and practice
it together with your students. Then you will see the activeness of your
students obviously. Great teacher!!
Actually, there are many
kinds of English songs in this world but most of the teacher never uses English
song to be their media for teaching. The
fact said that there are some teachers still apply conventional teaching method
in the class. They just sit and ask some questions directly to the students or
give many assignments to the students without teaching first. Oh, poor teacher!
Looking
back on my activity that was done in each class of my school, singing a song
was nice activity. It helped me to gain the students attention and deliver the
topic. It was better than shouted to them loudly or putting your fore finger in
your mouth. In the term of second semester, I tried to apply number of English
songs in each class of my school such as Hokey Pokey, If You’re Happy, Baa
Baa Black Sheep, Hello, How Are You?, ABC’s song, Fruits’ song, Colors’ song,
Clothes song, Greeting song etc. One of them had been applied outdoor, so
the students could move and practice it happily. Hokey
Pokey was
the one of the most interesting song to be applied. I practiced Hokey Pokey
in the fourth grade. This song helped me to teach Part of Human Body. Finally, after practicing this song, my
students could comprehend the topic easily.
Although
Hokey Pokey spent a lot of energy to
practice it, this
song has some benefits such as:
1.
first, it helps
me to gain the affective and psychomotor marks of the students.
2.
second, Hokey
Pokey is also can be used for getting break since language activity.
3.
third, this song
also rehearses the students to comprehend where their right or left side is.
4.
fourth, the nice
improvement is asking the students to bring their favorite toys and sing Hokey
Pokey. Then when they practice it ask them to put it
"in" and "out" while singing. This activity will make them understand about preposition of “in” or
“out”.
Moreover, practicing Hokey Pokey
was nice activity; I also practiced some English songs in the lower class of my
school. The favorite songs were Baa Baa Black Sheep and Hello, How
Are You?. It was chosen because it was interesting to be applied and easy
to be practiced. In conclusion, I have some tips in how to select easy and nice
English song, they are:
1.
first, if the
teachers will use songs to be their media of teaching, they should be selective
in choosing the kinds of song. For example in the lower level the teacher
should choose a song with simple vocabularies and vice versa.
2.
second, the teacher
must learn the language skills of the song and also the content of it. Finally
the teachers will not get their stuck of the students’ questions.
3.
third, if it
needs to be practiced outdoor, the teacher should manage the time allocation of
learning and the number of students. Whether or not it need to be divided into
groups.
4.
fourth, prepare
the scoring table so it will make the teacher easy to get the students’ mark.
5.
the last, after
singing and practicing together, don’t forget to give some feedbacks to the
students. It aims for testing their comprehension of what the teacher has
given.
Frankly speaking, teaching is not
always sit, speak and give assignment but teaching is a way to express your
creativity to the students. Singing a song is the right choice. Have a nice
trial yay!
